We all know that in Australia, house prices and rentals have outstripped the ability of those on fixed incomes to pay.

Maybe you own your own house, too small to share and too old to maintain on your limited income? Every spare cent goes on house maintenance overheads and you are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain any kind of social life. Life is closing in.

Maybe you rent your own unit, one at the bottom of the market that is depressing and verging on un-liveable for any of variety of reasons.

Maybe you rent a room in a private house, only to find that you have no tenants' or even human rights. You can be hit upon or turfed out and have no protections in law. This is happening to increasing numbers of women.

A better way

Have you considered that there is a better way, as long as you are prepared to consider sharing? And sharing is not as bad as it might seem if you get the right house. You may even enjoy having company on your own terms, and stimulation from others.

Room Price

The cost per room goes down as the price of the house goes up. If you get a good average house you will pay $150-$200 per bedroom, and if you get a huge luxury house, you can pay as little as $100 per bedroom.

Bathrooms

At the most, in a quality house you will share your bathroom with one other, and maybe even have your own.

Kitchens

In addition, you will have a modern kitchen to share with dishwasher, and if you are lucky there may even be two kitchens.

Living areas

Then in the larger houses there are three or four living areas so no-one ever need be underfoot.

Run a search on www.realestate.com.au or www.domain.com.au for houses with at least 5 bedrooms and at least 4 bathrooms and you may be amazed at what is returned. Look at the kitchens, look at the bathrooms, look at the living areas and in some cases, look at the locations.

Is this better than you currently have? Does the kitchen with the view over the coast appeal, or the cathedral ceilings, or the established vegetable gardens.
